Support Services
Having cancer can affect you in many different ways. The diagnosis may make you feel worried, sad, confused, or even angry. Treatments may change the way you look and how you feel about yourself and your body. The demands of treatment may also affect your personal relationships and make it difficult to manage all your responsibilities. In addition to your medical concerns you may have many emotional and practical concerns. There are resources available to help you. Financial assistance is addressed in Section 6. In this section you will find the following information:

The following are local programs that support cancer patients during treatment.

HOPE, Inc. - Helping Oncology Patients Excel
HOPE, Inc. is a local nonprofit that provides direct services to patients through a variety of programs. HOPE is dedicated to helping oncology patients excel through financial and emotional assistance and the development of clinical trials research. HOPE's programs are available to anyone living or being treated for cancer in NWA (Benton, Washington, Carroll and Madison Counties). Highlands Oncology Group is proud to partner with HOPE to provide professional oncology social work services to cancer patients. In addition, HOPE provides the following direct services for patients and their families:

Prescription Assistance - HOPE assists patients with the process of completing paperwork to receive any medication related to their cancer treatment through Pharmaceutical company programs. HOPE will also buy medications directly for patients during waiting periods, for drugs without program and/or for those with high co-pays. HOPE will assist patients with up to $500 worth of medications.

Emergency Assistance - HOPE offers an emergency assistance program that seeks to bridge the gap for patients facing financial difficulty due to their illness. HOPE can help with up to $800 in assistance to cover such things as housing needs (rent, mortgage, home owners insurance, some utilities) or transportation needs (gas, car payments, car insurance, travel to out of town treatment).

Emotional Assistance - Through professional social workers, HOPE is able to offer a continuum of emotional services ranging from crisis intervention, resource mobilization, supportive counseling and psychosocial counseling - all at no cost to the patient. Our emotional services are available to patients, family members and/or caregivers.

Clinical Trials Research - HOPE works to develop and promote clinical trials in NWA. We work to increase participation through accessibility for local patients and to increase community awareness about the importance of cancer research for the future of cancer care. HOPE can assist you in locating clinical trials locally or nationally that might be a fit for you, or in answering general questions you might have about the risks and benefits of participating in a clinical trial.

Educational Opportunities Classes and seminars are held throughout the year on a variety of topics dealing with cancer.

Resource Library The collection of literature and videos can help you and your family learn more about a particular condition and its treatment options. You'll find books on coping, humor, encouragement and healing. In addition, free internet access is available to assist in your search for the most current information.

Guest Rooms
Guest rooms are available for out-of-town cancer patients who are undergoing treatments and/or hospitalization. These rooms, available at the Cancer Support Home in Fayetteville only, are also offered to family members accompanying a patient. If a patient is receiving cancer treatment at any area facility, one support person may stay overnight with the patient. When a patient is hospitalized, two support people may stay overnight at the home. This program is provided for patients upon referral and is based upon room availability.
