TIPS FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS
1.    How to get all your questions answered during your office visit:
Designate a spiral notebook to be used specifically for your health information. Write down all your questions as they come up during the week and bring this notebook with you to your next office appointment. When you visit with your doctor, go down your list of questions with him to make sure they have all been answered.

2.    How to help you remember everything your doctor discussed with you:
There is often so much information presented to you during your first few appointments that it may feel overwhelming to remember and/or comprehend everything that was discussed. The following suggestions will help you overcome this problem:

  a.    Bring a tape recorder with you to your doctor’s appointment and record the visit. Once you go home, replay the tape to make sure you understood everything that was discussed. If you have any questions, feel free to call and speak with our call nurse or write down your questions for your next doctor’s appointment. If you do not have a tape recorder of your own, we have them available in our clinics. Simply ask your medical assistant and return it when you are finished using it.

  b.    Have a friend or family member accompany you to your doctor’s appointment to have a second pair of ears in the room. After your doctor’s visit, discuss the visit with him or her to compare notes.

3. How to avoid the stress of answering several phone calls and questions of concerned friends and family members:
  a.    Designate one friend or family member outside your immediate family to be your "update contact." Inform this one person of your current health status, upcoming treatments, doctor’s appointments, etc. Give them as much, or as little, information as you want others to know. Then tell your other friends and family members to call this person when they want to know how you are doing. Of course, this can be modified to whatever system works best for you. You may only want certain people to call your update contact, and others to call you directly.

  b.    If you have a treatment coming up and you know you do not want to answer any calls during this time, leave a message on your answering machine stating that it is your treatment week and you will get back to them the following week. Then use your answering machine to screen your calls, and pick up the phone when you want to.

4. How to organize your doctor’s appointments, treatments, bills, paperwork, etc.:
  a.    Designate a calendar specifically for your health related appointments. Record all your doctor’s appointments, treatments, lab (blood) work appointments, etc, on this calendar. It can also be used to help remind you when certain bills are due, including bills related to your living expenses. If you are having trouble financially, please refer to the financial assistance packet or call our social worker, Jessica Minton, at 1-479-571-4673 for more information.  There are not only local agencies available to help you, but also national organizations designed to offer financial help to individuals with cancer.

  b.    Using a binder or expandable file system, organize your paperwork by category (i.e. medical records, bills, financial information, resources, important phone numbers, emergency phone numbers, allergies, health conditions, lab work results, etc.)

MOST IMPORTANTLY: DON’T hesitate to ask questions. We a have a call nurse on staff everyday to assist you with any needs you may have. A little question and a little answer can relieve a lot of anxiety.
